Bede Griffiths, OSB Cam 1906-1993

December 17, 2009

Today is the birthday of Fr Bede Griffiths. Fr. Bede, born Alan Richard Griffiths, was a convert to Roman Catholicism. He was a Benedictine monk of Prinknash Abbey near Gloucester. He was a member of the monastic communities at Farnborough and Pluscarden before founding an ashram in India.

His ecumenical insights led him to embrace apparent pairs of “opposites” and integrate cultures and faith traditions, while honoring the uniqueness of each.

In his last public lecture on December 13, 1992, Fr. Bede spoke these inspiring words: “The tremendous power of the Spirit is abroad in the world today, and it is everywhere you go. On every continent people are discovering this new understanding of the Spirit; and that is where we all ought to be.” (from A Human Search, Bede Griffiths Reflects on His Life)
