De Anima I

September 3, 2009

Last night I got into a conversation with a good friend of mine about death. She had spoken to her young daughter about death. I thought this was a heroic and brave thing to do. It is a topic we shy away from because it reminds us of the mortality of our own bodies and that scares us. But what a wonderful thing to spend time with a child talking about the beauty and immortality of the soul.

I remember hearing that in his final hours, Cardinal Basil Hume felt that death had become his friend. There is a lesson here for us I feel. Do we welcome death as a friend? Do we believe in the beauty and immortality of our souls? Do we care for them?

Below is of clip of St Josemaria Escriva talking about death: now don’t get all da Vinci Code about it! There are some great clips of him speaking and he clearly had a passionate love for Jesus Christ. More on the soul tomorrow.
